From brokenness to breakthrough: A story of redemption

Lee was supported by chaplains from Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy.Lee* did not grow up in a Christian home. Raised by a single father after his parents separated when he was very young, he experienced the challenges of life without a mother. His dad did the best he could, but addiction cast a long shadow over the household.

As Lee entered his later teen years, he watched his father’s relationships collapse and his life spiralled further into addiction. The pain of that season, combined with other hardships, left deep marks.

During his 20s, Lee turned to drinking and then to drugs to numb his pain. He describes himself during those years as a lost little boy searching for someone to love him. Unhealthy relationships and self-destructive patterns defined much of that decade. Following another relationship breakdown, his substance abuse and the company he kept led to crime.

Lee entered prison, serving five weeks. Upon release he sensed something different – a presence he could not yet name. He began to see the world in a new light. But he was still broken, and he knew he would return to jail.

Four months later he was back in custody, this time arriving thoroughly defeated. Handcuffed to a hospital bed with police standing guard, he contemplated escape or suicide rather than facing more time inside. He had recently begun injecting drugs and felt trapped in despair.

Lee did go back to prison, and that’s where a chaplain handed him a Bible. That simple act marked the beginning of profound change. Over the next four months, Lee went from a lost, scared, and defeated young man to the strongest he had ever been – mentally, physically, and spiritually.

“Jesus saved my life,” Lee says. “I wouldn’t be here right now if it wasn’t for Him.” Reading scripture daily became his new source of strength. Where he once used drugs to numb pain, he now turned to God’s word. It opened his heart, healed wounds he thought were permanent, and taught him a new way to face his issues instead of running from them.

Six months after he left prison for the final time, Lee was baptised. He calls it the best day of his life.

Central to his transformation was his son, born nine years earlier. Lee had abandoned his child’s mother while she was heavily pregnant, and he spent years avoiding the responsibility of being a father. In prison, Jesus brought his son firmly into his heart. Everything Lee did from that point – training hard, studying the Bible, rebuilding himself – was motivated by his desire to become a father worthy of his boy, even though he had never met him.

After his release, Lee set out to find his son on the Sunshine Coast. On a bus heading there, he prayed: “Father, if you help me find my son today, I will never, ever doubt my faith again.” Walking the streets and close to giving up, he turned a corner and came face-to-face with the boy’s mother. Moments later his son ran to him, jumped into his arms, and gave him the biggest hug of his life.

Since then, Lee has made deliberate steps toward restoration. He has sought peace with his grandparents, visited his sister’s grave, and held himself accountable for past failures. Today he has permanent accommodation, steady work, business plans, healthy relationships – and people who love him, who he loves in return. Once a role model for the wrong things, he is now becoming a positive role model.

Lee’s story is not one of instant perfection but of radical redirection. From ice addiction, crime, and the edge of hopelessness, he found new life through a Bible given to him in a prison cell and a saviour who met him there. The lost little boy looking for love discovered he had been loved all along.
